Summer Care<\/span><\/h1>\n

Pigs are very prone to heat stress, and need a way to cool themselves down when the weather is very hot.<\/p>\n

They don\u2019t have sweat glands like humans and some other animals do, so they use water or mud to help keep themselves cool.<\/p>\n

The mud layer can also help keep off pesky flies and other annoying biting insects.<\/p>\n

During summer, make sure that they have:<\/p>\n

\n
• Access to clean drinking water<\/li>\n
• Shade<\/li>\n
• A wallow or swimming area to cool down<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

  Electrolyte Formula<\/strong><\/p>\n

  This can be used to help treat dehydration due to either heat stroke, or dehydration caused by gastroenteritis including diarrhea<\/p>\n

  \n
  • 2 tablespoons sugar (glucose if available)<\/li>\n
  • 1 tsp salt<\/li>\n
  • Pinch of baking soda (optional)<\/li>\n
  • Add to I litre of water<\/li>\n
  • Add some flavouring such as Milo,
    \nor 1 tablespoon of Raro powder from a sachet (optional)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

    Dose: give up to 20ml via syringe by mouth each hour (piglet)<\/p>\n

    And 50ml for adults<\/p>\n

    Cover if shivering from heat stroke (a damp towel is ideal) and if no better after 3-4 hrs call in the vet who may need to administer intravenous fluid.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
